Newcastle owner Mike Ashley set to reject Amanda Staveley’s £250m bid for the club

NEWCASTLE owner Mike Ashley is set to reject Amanda Staveley’s £250million bid for the club, according to reports.

Ashley wants closer to £400m for the Magpies but is keen to offload the North East club before Christmas.

Staveley – financier for Middle East-based company PCP Partners group – wants the takeover completed well before the January transfer window closes and is offering a one-off payment, according to the Times.

The Premier League needs 30 days once an agreement has been reached to undertake due diligence and sign off the deal.

Ashley has so far rejected Staveley’s bid of a series of planned payments with a relegation clause inserted which would see her recoup cash if the Toon are relegated this season.

And he will once again say no to the businesswoman who helped broker Sheikh Mansour’s Manchester City takeover in 2009, according to the Daily Mail.

The Sports Direct tycoon has no other offers on the table.

And it appears Staveley is unwilling to significantly up her offer.

The report claims Ashley has known the details of her bid for three weeks but is holding out for more.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez will hope a deal can be completed as soon as possible in order to fund a January spending spree.

Ashley in August admitted he is unable to compete financially with the giants of the Premier League in the transfer market.

Defeat at Chelsea on Saturday was the fifth in six games for Newcastle, who now sit just five points above the drop zone despite their impressive start to the season.

Benitez said: “We have to improve, but yeah, to stay up I think [we have the quality].

“But when people talk about these games, this is the Premier League. We know we have to improve a lot of things, but still we will be a team in the bottom half of the table.

“We have to keep working harder. We knew from day one that we will be in the bottom half of the league. It’s not a surprise to anyone.”

When asked whether January would be a big month for Newcastle due to a potential takeover, he said: “I have no idea.”
